Composer Elmer Bernstein to Attend “How Now, Dow Jones” at the York

Elmer Bernstein, whose credits as a film composer range from Some Came Running to Serpico to The Blues Brothers to Far From Heaven, will attend the York Theatre Company’s “Musicals in Mufti” production of Bernstein’s flop 1967 Broadway musical How Now, Dow Jones this weekend, according to the York’s press representative. Bernstein will see the show on Saturday evening, November 9.

Originally directed by George Abbott, How Now, Dow Jones ran for 220 performances on Broadway. With a book by Max Shulman and lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, the show tells the story of a romance that causes a panic on Wall Street as the Dow Jones Industrial Average is manipulated to an “all-time high” of 1,000 points.

Though Bernstein scored The Magnificent Seven, To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal House, The Great Santini, The Color of Money, and many other highly popular films, How Now, Dow Jones was one of his few Broadway ventures; the most famous song from the show is “Step to the Rear.”

The York production is directed by Sheryl Kaller, with Fred Lassen serving as musical director. The cast of the show includes Brooks Ashmanskas, Cheryl Freeman, Kaitlin Hopkins, and David Garrison. Peformances are November 8-10 in the York’s home in the Theatre at Saint Peter’s Church, 54th Street & Lexington Ave. For ticket information, call 212-935-5820 or visit the website www.yorktheatre.org.
